Tell us about your practice…
My art is an expression of my place in the world. My subject matter is personal. An intimate expression if you like, but I think also that my imagery is universal and open to interpretation. I really like that other people derive their own meaning from it.
When do you feel most creative?
Art has always been important and enjoyable to me. I find that I’m most creative after an extended break – I’ll have a rush of creativity then feel the need to rest for a week or two. I’ve trained myself to do this, as I could quite easily live in my studio, but balance is important.
What’s the vibe like in your studio?
My studio is a place of solitude and retreat for me. Although I love listening to music, my studio is a place of silence and calm. I prefer to work in this way, as I feel more at one with the art piece. It’s just me and the materials coming together in those moments.
What materials do you use?
Mostly, my materials consist of acrylic and oil pastels. For surfaces, I use unstretched canvas or linen, paper, and sometimes wood. I dislike complexity in life, preferring simplicity in most things. This extends to my art practice as well. You will notice that I generally work with a very limited colour palette too.
