What is your work about?
My paintings function on a few levels. At first glance they are abstract works, combining bold geometric shapes against a background of exposed raw linen or canvas. A closer look reveals the intricate details; the top layer of each work is created using a micro-brush over a contrasting underlayer of a thick, impastoed acrylic print. And on a third level, my paintings are almost always socially informed. My current series aims to visualise some of the figures surrounding the under-representation of women in the art market.
How did you come to be an artist?
I’ve always loved art and been surrounded by creatives. My paternal grandmother was a hobby-painter. I remember visiting her as a child and being mesmerised by the salon wall of her paintings. My older sister is also very creative and today works as a ceramicist. I distinctly remember seeing her drawings as a child and longing to have her level of skill. I think I’ve always been an artist at heart, but apart from periods of study, I have only really rediscovered my painting practice and started to work on this full-time over the last three years.
Take us inside your studio…
My in-house studio is my favourite room in my home in Munich, Germany. Given it is the space that I spend most of my time, that’s quite important. It is filled with natural light from the two full length windows and French doors that open up directly on to a terrace. I’m so lucky to have this space and although it’s not your typical white-box style studio, it certainly doesn’t hold my productivity back.
