Ones to Watch: Zoë Slee

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Charlotte Middleton writes.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours from the Australian National University School of Art & Design, Canberra in 2014, Zoë Slee uses her ceramics and installation practice to reflect processes of transformation in nature. In 2015, Slee became the youngest recipient of the Doug Alexander Award at the Canberra Potters Exhibition. Following this win, Slee received a grant from the Australia Council for the Arts, which relocated her to Denmark to pursue a new body of research. With her evident aptitude for academic inquiry, Slee’s practice is conceptually rich and highly original. Her inventive use of porcelain and plexiglass results in intriguing, highly detailed works that engage with dualities of living and dead, hard and soft, stasis and movement. In 2018, Slee was a finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, and her work was included in the Australian Ceramics Triennale in 2019. Having recently participated in a group show and digital residency project with MAY SPACE Online, Slee is looking forward to developing new work for exhibition alongside various curatorial opportunities in 2022.
