If we ever needed a reminder of nature’s all-encompassing power, it’s now. The rambling terrains of Sydney-based artist Elaine Foulsham are a gentle call for us to recognise the vast and diverse natural world we persistently attempt to curate. Devoid of human representation, her layered acrylic and mixed media paintings focus on the energy transferred between nature and ourselves. The undulating terrains of open fields and coastal areas are translated with awe and sincerity onto her canvas, which she paints intuitively from her garden studio. “At times I feel a certainty for what I wish to achieve before I begin and other times I just let the image talk to me as it unfolds,” she says. The more you gaze at Elaine’s vast landscapes, the more you get lost in their visceral energy.
