Ones to Watch: Bonco

Outstanding artists to have on your radar right now. Maddy Matheson writes.

A grid in mathematics is a set of axes consisting of coordinates, used to plot measurements or map out an object in space. But what does the grid mean to an artist? For Bonco, artist Paul Nathan’s alter ego, the grid is filled with possibilities – it is a portal into the otherworldly and a gateway to examine how the boundaries of time and space can be pushed and pulled, always remaining in flux. Bonco completed a Master of Fine Art at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland, during which time he developed this method of geometric abstraction. The results speak for themselves, with the artist winning the RT Nelson Emerging Artist Award in 2019, followed by the Gordon Harris Art Supplies Prize in 2020. Bonco has also been a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Award twice as well as a finalist in the Wallace Art Awards. In 2019 Bonco held a solo exhibition Peshat at Northart, Auckland, and last year he exhibited his work on large electronic billboards throughout New Zealand in partnership with Art Ache. During last year’s lockdown in Auckland, Bonco had a near sell-out show staged at {Suite}. With eight exhibitions on the horizon this year including a solo exhibition at Scott Lawrie Gallery, Auckland, slated for August, Bonco earns the title of one to watch.
