Where did your interest in design come from?

I grew up in North-West Sydney and had a pretty typical suburban upbringing. Neither of my parents worked particularly creative jobs but my mum was always very creative – painting and making us clothes. So my interest in design definitely comes from her.

My first full time job was at a design and branding agency and I was surrounded by creatives, although not in a creative role myself. I really got to witness the full process in that role and although I didn’t start IN BED until more than a decade later, it was really integral in understanding design.

How did IN BED begin?

I’d been a stylist for about eight years prior to starting IN BED. I loved it but I was a little tired of realising other people’s ideas and vision. Around 2012 I became obsessed with interiors and found that there wasn’t really a home textiles brand that resonated with me. I also loved that the interior design world was one I knew nothing about. I think there’s something to be said for going into a project a little blindly. You take risks you maybe wouldn’t otherwise. So, after a lot of research, sampling and hard work I launched IN BED in 2013 with an edited collection of bedding, throws and homewares.

Why do you think the home should be a creative space?

I think your home should be an expression of who you are and how you like to live. This is intrinsically creative, even if you don’t see yourself as such. Your home should tell a story; mementos from past lives and travels, things you love for no particular reason and pieces that give warmth and remind you of good memories when you’re around them.

Where do you find the designers and artists you work with?

A boring answer but Instagram is a big one! Another way has been through friends and through our IN BED Journal as contributors have put them forward for features.

The ethos of IN BED is to foster the production of timelessly beautiful products for the everyday. What is your idea of timeless and how have you fed this into the IN BED brand?

For me, a timeless product is something that I love today and will still love in 10 or 20 years’ time. For IN BED, that means creating products from natural, sustainable, beautiful fabrics in the best way we can. I really think that the way a product is made is reflected in the end result, so we’re constantly working to better our products and processes.

Can you tell us more about the IN BED x Women’s Community Shelters initiative and why you began this partnership?

Over 80 percent of our customers are women, so as a way to give back to our community we provide ongoing donations of bed linen sets for use in the shelters and host annual fundraising activities. Working with a charity or cause is something I feel is really important for all businesses. It keeps you accountable, grounded and gets you out of your own headspace of just concentrating on what you as a business are doing.

Do you have a collection of art in your own home? If so, any stand-out pieces?

We’ve just moved into our recently renovated home and are slowly building on pieces we love. I think it’s important to take your time with this so they’re things you truly love and want to have forever, rather than rushing out and styling your home within an inch of its life with ‘stuff’.

Some of my favourite pieces are a Walk In The Park bowl stand made with reclaimed kwila and totara timbers and a large artwork by George Raftopoulos.

Are there any artists on your radar at the moment?

I love Melbourne based artist Daniel O’Toole’s paintings, and we are about to add some amazing pieces from local ceramicist softedge to the store – I have my eye on one of her giant checkerboard platters and sluggish cups for myself!
