This painting really exemplifies the word painterly. The fluid, gestural brushstrokes render this scene almost semi-abstract in execution which adds a romantic, dreamy atmosphere to the scene. Marion Abraham has deftly captured a feeling of gentle movement which lends a lively sense to the work – perhaps a breeze blowing and lilting grasses. I adore the palette, drawn from nature – all the colours work so harmoniously.

FELIXE LAING

Curator, Sanderson Contemporary Art, Auckland

Abraham’s work Meadow is the artist’s contemporary homage to the Romantic era of painting. There is a familiar warmth in her figures; their presence blending with their surroundings. However, her style of painting has a beautiful immediacy about it, reflective of the urgency and passion of the depicted subjects. Her layered brush work composes a glimpse into her reconstructed memories in an impulsive, compelling way.

JOHN STAFFORD

Director, Onespace Gallery, Brisbane

Meadow unashamedly captures a moment of intentional romantic affection, even desire, as natural as the landscape around us, and expressed with conviction. The loose brushwork and naturalistic tones match the expression intended by the protagonists who offer their affection willingly. As viewers, we share in a moment of spontaneous intimacy; a moment that is quietly authentic and honest.
