I find the figurative genre to be without doubt one of the most engaging. I am in awe of the artist’s ability to create ambience and dialogue through the figurative pose and expression. There is a lot to consider when viewing a figurative work such as this, not only the conceptual aspects but the technical approach the artist has taken in representing the figure. The accuracy and knowledge of the human form is considered and subconsciously tested by all viewers. I believe it is instinctive for all of us to intuitively compare the image to our universal and familiar view of the figure, and in this respect Anna-Carien Goosen has delivered a brilliantly composed figurative artwork.

This striking painting suggests a narrative as the figure dominating the foreground seems to be in motion. I’m intrigued but the painting doesn’t give a lot away so I’m left to pick up clues from the background and the figure’s expression. The subject matter makes this piece a bold choice but the softness of the colours and the painterly approach quieten the impact.
