Expert Eye: Clash of the Colours

STYLIST JULIA GREEN EXPLORES THIS SEASON’S COMING TRENDS AND HOW TO INCORPORATE THEM INTO YOUR HOME.

As we edge towards summer and indeed a new year we start to wonder: what colour trends can we expect? And just how will that effect our options as discerning art lovers and collectors?

Oh, to have a crystal ball! But we can reveal some interesting observations and insights for the summer ahead.

With the Pantone colour authorities suggesting a ‘sea inspired’ palette will be on the cards for 2020, we can expect to be bathed in all shades of blue and green. These colours are well known for the calm they bring to an interior. It’s fair to say that whoever coined the phrase “blue and green should never be seen” has now officially retired.

Pantone experts have also suggested that 2020 will be the year for mixing and matching, so for those interested in eclectic interiors, this could be your year!

With the inevitable overlap between fashion and interiors, it makes sense to look to the catwalk for reliable predictions. According to the bloggers at Patternbank, stylised floral’s and bold African patterns will clash in bright colour combos for a vibrant Spring/Summer 2020, which means we are destined to see some exciting groupings emerge and make their way into our homes.

So, what does this mean for artists and astute and aspiring collectors of art? Large oversized floral compositions, adding signs of life to interior spaces and walls by seamlessly linking the outdoor to indoor. Bold colourways will feature all shades of blues and greens, as people strive to disconnect from the distractions of their busy lives and become lost in their own peaceful home surrounds.

Like anything style related this is all, of course, subjective. While some may embrace next year’s patterns and palettes with enthusiasm, others can introduce it gently. One thing is certain – nature is calling out to be seen and heard inside the home.
