Best of Nudity: Julie Hutchings

“From my first life drawing session, I was hooked”, says Julie Hutchings who, since that first fateful day, has been facilitating a life drawing group for 24 years. Julie’s commitment to her practice is readily apparent in her works, which speak of both a keenly observant eye garnered from years of training, and an inventiveness that allows her to transform reality into a world of her own. Taking her cues from Francis Bacon and Vincent van Gogh, Julie does not merely transcribe what she sees but deconstructs it, allowing it to transform into something more than just an image. Her works become snapshots of a narrative, conveying movement and emotion through layers of line and colour. She usually works in charcoal, oils and oil sticks, enabling her to create an atmosphere of mystery as each layer is enveloped in the next. Lines dip in and out of planes of colour, or intertwine with each other in hazy, half-seen gestures. Her figures defy any straightforward interpretation, as Julie is committed to relating a story without descending into the literal, and her audience is left to eke out their own meaning.
