“My true passion is working with light”, effuses artist Corrie Furner, “there is something that just envelops the space and I can’t help but smile and feel soothed to my core.” A multimedia artist who has exhibited across Australia, Corrie’s work invites her audience to assess and reassess objects and places through the transformative facilities of light. Having used a vast array of lighting systems, from domestic lamps to industrial fluorescents, her recent works have departed from found objects and into manufactured neon.
This is particularly evocative in the context of her neon installation work This Is Not A Still Life. In the tradition of the 16th century Dutch and Flemish Masters, the genre of the still life aims to appreciate and immortalise everyday objects. Corrie’s still life sits within the wilderness of the Blue Mountains, where nature grows and changes, thus making her work a comment about the constant evolution of existence. However, her use of neon gives the work a melancholic undertone, reminding us of the effects of industrialisation and consumerism. If, as Giorgio Morandi stated in the early 20th century, still lifes are a reflection of who we are, what does a still life formed of neon convey about us?
