Looking at the diversity of her practice, it would be easy to mistake the work of Betty Collier as the output of two separate artists. Influences of a childhood spent on the farm permeate her stylised, lifelike drawings and paintings of flora and fauna. While this subject matter is also the focus of Betty’s sculpture work, her bronzes are usually more abstracted and free-flowing – for example, frogs that appear as characters from a picture book.
Considering the sense of control that is apparent in the final pieces, it may come as a surprise that Betty only started to sculpt when she was nearly 40, after completing a sculpture major. When she first trained as an art teacher for secondary school, women weren’t allowed to work with metal, wood or stone. Betty’s current practice proves that she has since more than made up for lost time.
