Working across the mediums of painting, photography, sculpture, digital and installation, Archibald finalist artist Justine Muller uses her art practice to explore her passion for social justice and the environment. While her work may not at first appear activist, there is a subtlety to her social commentary that does not get lost on her audience. “At first, I may have not even realised it, but underlining all my work is a message that I wanted to say, or rather comment on society,” says Justine. “I think that is the job of the artist, as it has always been throughout history.” Goddaughter of the late Australian union and environment activist, Jack Mundey, Justine has always believed that environmental and social justice go hand in hand. Her current works vary in medium and subject – they may be landscapes, portraits or installations – yet they consistently feature subtle elements of protest. Her latest work, a collaboration with Uncle Badger Bates, is currently touring in the exhibition Barka, The Forgotten River, which comments on the demise of the Barka (Darling River) and its correlating impact on the local Indigenous community.
