Tom Phillips is an expressionist artist who focuses on the human form. He has participated in numerous group shows and solo exhibitions around Australia, including major art prizes. He has been a finalist three times in the Kilgour Prize at Newcastle Art Gallery, four time finalist at the Manning Art Prize at Manning Regional Art Gallery and two time finalist at the Open Art Prize at Muswellbrook Regional Art Gallery. In 2017 he received Limberup Mentorship run by Guildhouse. He was mentored by renowned artist Stewart MacFarlane.
Phillips depicts physical and emotional human struggle. He see his figures as outsiders, aliens or forgotten people within our society. Thus his figures are naked and exposed, as to express an emotional state of their own vulnerability, anxiety and their fragile existence in this modern world. Raw colour emphasises tension. Phillip’s work borderlines from abstraction to figuration, this process creating tension and adding to the energy within each work.
