Berny Bacic is a Sydney-based designer and visual artist. Berny established Burrow, a design studio in 2002. She is also one of the founders of Ms Tee, a feminist-inspired fashion label. Largely self-taught she started at art school before transferring to graphic design to complete a design degree. After working in commercial design, her attention is now focused back on her art-making practice.
Berny’s work explores the nuances of balance, structure and emotional existence through minimalist and abstract composition. My paintings explore the fragmented concept of “self” through interwoven perceptions. Her work begins as sketches. A number of compositions are considered. The final selection is transferred onto canvas and paint is applied in layers. The artist goes back and forth for a number of days applying various textures and colours to each piece. The way the paint dries is layered and spontaneous, set against a carefully structured composition. Berny works with acrylics, mixed media and gouache. Many of her recent works are mixed media, using pumice, gesso and fibre paste. She uses contrasting textures to create tension between shapes.
