Ashlee Bucholtz is an emerging artist located in the Blue Mountains, NSW. Her primary focus is on painting landscapes with an emphasis on colours that capture light, mood and atmosphere. The physical experience of an atmosphere is only one aspect and Ashlee is working on merging her evolving practice into stop motion animation; expanding the idea of the visual narrative represented in vibrating colour.
Bucholtz graduated from the National Art School in 2016 and Newcastle Art School, Hunter Street TAFE in 2013. She has exhibited at Gallery Factory 49, The Saatchi and Saatchi office in Sydney and the Bathurst Art Fair. She has completed a drawing internship at the National Art School and was awarded the international Cill Rialaig Residency in Ireland in 2017.
Bucholtz’s practice focuses on individual landscapes that are depicted through a selected palette of pastel colours. The process begins by looking at sketches and matching the final sketch with a colour palette that conveys the atmosphere she is interested in. This preparation of sketching and matching colour can take weeks, but is key to the success of her paintings. By using colour to express the sensory experience of the land, the painting has the ability to move beyond representation and into the realm of a ‘felt’ experience.
