Ann Russell is a mixed media artist, working from her rural property on the North West outskirts of Brisbane. She is intensely interested in the ‘other’ and consequently tends to work with liminal spaces caught just outside ‘real’ existence, on the peripheries of our perception. Her works are depictions of these worlds, combining elements and symbols that retain some of their meaning from our experience, juxtaposed with new meaning in the worlds she creates. Immersing herself in these spaces allows her to investigate transcendence, sacredness, memory, time and space. Layering is an important part of her work as it creates nuanced strata of meaning and symbolism. Often the work includes coatings of Perspex or clear resin, sometimes with objects embedded between, to indicate that the created world is beyond our normal experience but nonetheless rich, magical and ultimately desirable.
