ALICE WEST‘S GOAL IS TO STIR UP EMOTION. AND HAPPINESS IS HER NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. STELLA MARTINO WRITES.
“I CAN’T STAY AWAY from creating,” says Sunshine Coast-based artist Alice West. For her, art is just a part of life.
Her bold, colourful works catch your eye and your heart; her subjects often taking on a whimsical, childlike form. “Many of my paintings come straight from my imagination and show my inner child, with a little touch of magic,” says Alice, who takes great pride in being a self-taught artist. “I am inspired by life, nature and the little things that are often taken for granted.”
The atmosphere in Alice’s studio is bright, airy and colourful – an honest reflection of her work. The space opens up onto a lush green vista with views of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. “When I paint here the time disappears, I feel at peace,” says the artists. “It feels like I’ve entered another world!”
When inspiration strikes, a sketch usually follows. With an innate attention to detail, Alice begins to bring her visions to life starting with the background, which is often abstracted and contains many layers. Primarily painting in acrylic, Alice prefers using Golden Paints. “They have no fillers, which means maximum pigment load, vibrancy, longevity and they go further, especially when mixing colours.”
After moving into a bigger space in 2018, Alice says her goal now is to focus on her art business, enjoy the journey and paint, paint, paint!
