Stringybark Study 1 by Kylie Fogarty.
A visual artist living in Canberra, my studio looks out onto a green corridor of Gum trees, synonymous with Canberra’s ‘bush city’.
I first fell in love with the Australian Gum trees that lined Northbourne Avenue when I visited Canberra from Brisbane years ago. Now living in Canberra, I was amongst many who despaired as we watched each grand tree disappear as development for the City Rail commenced.
This has all cumulated in a series of works focusing on these grand and beautiful trees, a series which is still ongoing.
The stringy bark that collects within the branches, the coarse woody bark knots that grow as the tree ages, the thin paperbark falling gently from the trunk of the tree. All of these elements beckon to be represented through my art.
Stringybark Study 1 is an expressive work on paper which was the first of this series after I spent time sketching and considering each element of these amazing trees.
