Set against the dramatic frieze of the northern Illawarra escarpment, the Scarborough Hotel acts both as host to its many visitors and as witness to the many stories held both within and outside of its walls. As a returning resident after a 20 year hiatus, this quiet scene captured the peacefulness of this place long remembered.
Mark making together with aspects of figuration have allowed for a particular visual blend of the wild landscape and the ways it has been manipulated over time. I love the negative shapes that the escarpment carves out of the sky and the knowledge that its form has scarcely changed over time. With this in mind, I have sought to reference themes of constancy, the agility of nature and its rejuvenative qualities in this work.
