Monkey's Death, mixed media artwork by Desmond Mah
Painting, Mixed media
Monkey’s Death references the death of Sun Wukong (aka Monkey Magic). Monkey Magic (a Japanese television drama based on the 16th century Chinese novel, Journey to the West) was seen as a mutant misfit. Like Monkey, artist Desmond Mah has personal encounters with bigotry. Drawing from personal narratives, collective memory and mythology, Mah examines his own cultural mutation from his memories. The painting is embedded with his childhood scents and pop culture images, both familiar and unfamiliar, questions our views of foreign cultures and makes new cultural dialogue.
The painting was a finalist in the 2019 Invitation Art Prize (Western Australia).
