Midden is an abstract gouache composition using playfully organic shapes. I find the nature of gouache inspiring. It is a joy to apply, it has a velvety quality and its opaque pigments are vibrant and luminous. It lends itself to both broad gestural brushstrokes as well as fine detail. However gouache can be uncompromising – unwanted effects can result as it can ‘pick up’ what is underneath. So the challenge for me here was to develop some control over the gouache as I applied one layer of colour over another in order to create areas of light and dark that each have their own subtle variations in tone, punctuated by smaller areas of line work and pattern thus creating depth, liveliness and intrigue.
