My work engages with the field of Expanded Painting. Through sculpture and painting, I explore the notion of the ludic using a playful approach to colour, surface and space. Combining a diverse range of materials such as glass, found objects, scrap wood, and other industrial by-products to create the illusion of movement and interaction between two and three dimensions.
In “Kugelspiel” my aim was to highlight material properties by introducing metal mash which allows light to filter through, emphasising contrasting textures. This work invites the viewer to walk around the sculptures, as every angle has a different composition. ‘Kugelspiel used colour as main features, reflecting the artworks of modernist artists such as Mondrian and Miro. However, I became interested in the process of reduction and applied this to the chromatic aspect of the work. Like Malevich’s Suprematist works, my intention was to reduce the association of colour scheme to draw attention to texture and form.
