“The outback Australian landscape is resplendent with intense colour, amplified by perceptions and prior learnings. The Greek Tragedy of Icarus tells of a story of a boy who fell out of the sky to his death. Disobeying or disregarding his father’s suggestions to not fly too close to the sun, the wax holding together his flying device melted. The boy’s euphoric sky play, which was in fact an escape route, came to a fatal conclusion. The oft dead gums of the Australian outback stand sentinel like across the flat plains between Broken Hill and the Barrier Ranges. Initially a sculptural sensuous form, then a tragic reminder of our vulnerability in the face of the sun’s searing power.” – Joanna Cole
