My work over the past five years has included a collection of busts with the theme “Hairdo Cult”. This has allowed a wide range of images of busts with hair styles with which to indulge myself. Green Queen is a continuum of this series. Green Queen was made in two parts – the head was begun from the decolletage with a band of decoration (a harking back to Egyptian ornamentation) through to the face then the hair, looking somewhat like the 1960’s bouffant styles. She is a combination of historical elements, but her expression is one of enjoyment.
She is hand built using porcelain clay for fineness (for her head) and raku clay for the base. The base is inlaid randomly with coloured clay and has a clear glaze to seal it. The head has fine layers of gouache for the complexion and glaze for the green hair.
