My work explores the aesthetic and conceptual potential of the Ludic (or “play”) in the context of Expanded Painting.
In this work, I was concentrating on colour and capturing light. The structure is almost like a vessel holding the loose glass spheres in place so you can turn them around which brings a randomness a playfulness to the work. My ideas are mostly process-driven. Playing and placing shapes which aren’t specifically made for the artwork is an important aspect of my work. Thinking about composition along with the underlying ideas of a certain game which possesses rich aesthetic possibilities.
This work is a conflation of the object and image because it can be seen from multiple sides. It can have the illusion of something 2 dimensional but is a 3-dimensional object. You can think of that in terms of constant transitions between our perception of a circle versus a sphere. They look like circles but, they are spheres in reality
