This work is inspired by Valentine Lake Macquarie, in Newcastle NSW. The canvas started out as a Capital Blue Gesso square. I had a feeling to paint an ultramarine square in oil paint. So I gathered all my tubes of ultramarine and basically used all of them on the canvas, applying the paint with a palette knife. The end result was not what I had envisioned. The next morning with the paint still wet I got a brush stuck into the canvas and what emerged was this work. Broad strokes with green and a lighter blue, using a palette knife. I used the end of the brush to draw the trees, it scratched enough to reveal the capitol blue gesso. I was taken back to the shores of Lake Macquarie and the trick is always knowing when to stop. This work has painted sides and is unframed. It is also a dark blue that would look great on a white wall.
