I made this piece in response to the bushfires in 2019/20, particularly the stories a read about birds unable to escape the flames as the tried to fly to safety.
I see the shapes of the bird trapped by the heat. It’s cowering and has formed a molten armour for protection – as if it’s become a hybrid animal to survive. I think the image is beautiful and brutal, like our Australian landscape.
It was made from birds feathers, wings, spray paint and glitter card – then photographed with ‘in camera” distortions before using a digital mirror effect.
